This is a wonderful original Victorian Staffordshire cottage which is designed to be used as a pastille burner.
A pastille burner is a device that burns aromatic pastilles to create a sweet-smelling perfume and remove bad odors. They were popular in the 1800s and were used to deodorize homes during the Industrial Revolution. The windows provide a little light so were used a night light with a pastille inside which was inserted from the rear into a cavity as shown. This is a large one at over 5 inches high and all kinds of detail including flowers and leaves of porcelain all over including on the chimneys. There is crazing and small loss to the flower details as shown and it is a very charming piece which is of course, still useable.
As a vintage or antique item, it will show signs of age and patina. This is an authentic and old piece which would make a wonderful gift.
Please look at the photos carefully and please do ask any questions, I am happy to help.
