This is a beautiful Victorian book for needles, bodkins etc. and is a Mauchline Ware piece. It is unusually double sided with a a lovely motto of Made of the Wood That Grows on the Banks of the Doon, Bought in the Cottage and a lovely picture of the cottage to one side which is bordered in gilt. To the rear is the Burns Monument of Edinburgh with a lovely picture. . It has a nice leather spine and opens nicely to reveal a red silky interior for needles with one in place and a label. It measures 2.25 inches high and is in lovely antique piece and particularly collectable for the era.
The production of box-work or Mauchline ware took place from the 1820s until 1933 by the firm of W & A Smith. These boxes were extremely collectable and beautiful Scottish craftsmanship.
As a vintage or antique item, it will show signs of age and patina. This is a lovely very old notion.
